Another Nail in Nortel's Coffin

Friday, 17 December, 2010

Nortel, the once proud Canadian telecom giant, has already divested itself of every single one of its business units as part of its bankruptcy process. Today, it has officially sold off one of the most splendid corporate campuses in town to the federal government. Built large enough to house more than 15,000 high tech employees, it will, over the course of the next few years, be transformed into the new home for a large chunk of the Department of National Defence. The only remaining piece of Nortel is its portfolio of more than 4,000 patents. When that is eventually sold, Nortel shall be no more.

Are they attempting a new business model just to chase other companies with patent infringement lawsuits? It seems like the 'in' thing to do lately.

The patent infringement companies have been circling Nortel for quite a while now, hoping to tap into that lucrative patent well. Nortel isn't changing business models, it's looking to close up shop permanently. Just as well, since its executives can't seem to do anything right besides lining their own pockets. During the bankruptcy process, they had the gall to give themselves huge bonuses while denying any severance to laid off workers. Disgusting.
